Seeing Eye Dog Rings Opening Bell at Stock Exchange

Posted 1/06/2009.

Kristen The New York stock exchange recently welcomed a furry little guest at their stock floor for the opening day of the 2009 year.  A small nine week old golden retriever puppy, named Nancy from The Seeing Eye assistance dog training group rang the opening bell on the stock exchange yesterday.   Other members of The Seeing Eye group in Morris County were on hand to help Nancy open the exchange and of course give her plenty of loving attention and those all important walkies.    Jim Kutsch, chief executive officer of The Seeing Eye helped Nancy ring the bell, partly in celebration of the group’s 80th year in service.  Wow!    Kutsch stated, "The opening bell is watched (on TV). It gives us an opportunity to increase visibility and awareness of what we do…Even though we're in New Jersey, we draw students from everywhere."   In addition, Kutsch’s wife, Ginger attended the ceremony with their two Seeing Eye dogs, Colby and Payton.  Kutsch is himself visually impaired and a graduate of the Seeing Eye school.   The Seeing Eye is the oldest school in the country that trains assistance dogs for people who are blind and visually impaired.  It got it’s start on Jan. 29th, 1929 in Nashville, Tenn. And moved to Morris County, New Jersey in 1931.    Interestingly enough, The Seeing Eye is a trademarked name and you can only use it in application to dogs that are specifically bred and trained at that school.  Anyone familiar with the term, ‘Seeing Eye Dog’ will know exactly what it refers to now.  Yep, special graduates of The Seeing Eye school in Jersey.   The Seeing Eye is funded entirely by donations and foundation and corporate sponsors so it can help those who are visually impaired find help and a match in a Seeing Eye Dog.    Source: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/01/puppy_from_morris_countys_the.html
